Valentine's Day

"If men gather gold and silver or any other beautiful thing, and then see a woman lovely in appearance and beauty, they let all those things go, and gape at her, and with open mouths stare at her, and all prefer her to gold or silver or any other beautiful thing. A man leaves his own father, who brought him up, and his own country, and clings to his wife. With his wife he ends his days, with no thought of his father or his mother or his country. Therefore you must realize that women rule over you!
Do you not labor and toil, and bring everything and give it to women? A man takes his sword, and goes out to travel and rob and steal and to sail the sea and rivers; he faces lions, and he walks in darkness, and when he steals and robs and plunders, he brings it back to the woman he loves."
1 Esdras 4:18-24

"If you don't get school off on Valentine's Day, then why is it important?" -my little Karoline

"In a man's first love, he also discovers the time-continuum of all love; the continuity of history, the order of the universe, the destiny of man, all stand disclosed to the soul who falls in love for the first time. By his falling in love, his eyes are opened and his ears are sensitive to identities through all generations. He can read the riddles, he can decipher the flowers and the stars, he can speak and shout and sing."
-Fruit of Lips, Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy, 6

"But darling when I see you, I see me." -I See You, You See Me The Magic Numbers

My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away. For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is hears in our land; The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.
Song of Solomon 2:10-13

Sixteen

One old friend of mine just recently committed suicide.
Other old friends of mine are just becoming absolute gems in my life.
When joy and sadness combine, how do we comprehend the mysteries of God?

Music: The White Stripes
Zombie Apocalypse: Shaun of the Dead. Really funny.

The music, babe, its in your eyes
the chords are in your hair.
I do my best to read the notes
but no sound can compare.

Music

"This is precisely the unique thing about music: it speaks a language that is understood without learning, understood by everyone, not just by the so-called musical people. If this were not so, folk music would not be the universal phenomenon it is. Fundamentally, Bach and Beethoven speak no other language than the folk song."
-p. 4, The Sense of Music by Victor Zuckerkandl (former professor at St. John's College of Annapolis)

Seventeen

Big concerts are fun. No doubt. But there is something wonderful about drinking coffee around a little table with a couple of friends while one lonely musician you've never heard of before plays some pretty folk.

24 hour laundromats. Around about the twenty-fourth hour. Playing music. Its beautiful. Add a smoke, a couple cameras, friends and a hacky-sack.

As I learn more and more about guitar, well, its just a beautiful instrument.
I kind've wish everyone carried a guitar or a violin or a flute or a penny whistle or a harmonica, accordian, banjo, bongo, recorder, mandolin, trumpet, or just something, with them and played it while they waited at the bus stop or walked through the city.

Mr. Herb: Generally replaced by Emma, but I have grand expectations that both of them will make it through the winter.
Music: I really was going to feature Josh Ritter. Really. Before anybody else did it. I called it in my mind earlier this week. But since I was beaten to the punch, here's to Brian Baugh and the Beautiful Flaw. He was that wonderful lonely musician, and I'd like to hear him again.
Zombie Apocalypse: We found out the other day that Jen has a four percent greater chance of surviving the zombie apocalypse than Tyler. But at 60% I'm think they're both going to need my help. Rachel remains confident in her zombie survival skills because of her experience in a movie she never made.

"Flames, on the contrary, failed to consume...nor did they melt the crystalline, quick-melting kind of heavenly food."

Nineteen

So I missed last week. Beetles. That puts us a week behind schedule.

School is coming back. Its weird, cuz I thought that starting this next term was going to be a slower more relaxed start. But for some reason I'm already stressed out.

Music: makes me happy
Zombie Apocalypse: Left 4 Dead
Herby: a little yellowish

oh and for music, lets try the song Clumsy by Fergie. Ben and I listened but we didn't sing or dance at all to it on the way home. maaaaan, freshman year

I reserve the right to edit this post when I have something interesting to say.

Twenty-Zero

For lack of anything better, here are some lyrics I wrote.

There's a yellow door in Cashel
Where a poor girl used to live
And I would visit her at eventime
To see what I could give
Because her face was like the moon
And her eyes they shone so bright
That even though the stars were out
They didn't show at night.
And then one day I came home
To find her standing there
She was dressed like Buddy Holly
And gold was in her hair
So we left the town a-twinkling
One warm night in June
And she danced beneath the moonlight
While I played a simple tune

The smoke rings from the chimneys
They never look the same
But that yellow door on queen street
All it does is fade
And while we both lit up a cigarette
I turned round to her
"May I kindly have this dance?"
She smiled, I was sure.
So I gently took her left hand
And started up a waltz
We got around the sun
But when we finished I was lost.

But life, you know it changes
There's people I forgot
We all tell our sad sad tales
In one gigantic plot
But that moonlit girl in Cashel
And that faded yellow door
One day I'll come back to them
And live forevermore

And then some lyrics from my favorite thirty second Beatles song.

Her Majesty 's a pretty nice girl
but she doesn't got a lot to say.
Her Majesty 's a pretty nice girl
but she changes from day to day.
I wanna tell her that I love her a lot
but I got to get a belly full of wine.
Her Majesty 's a pretty nice girl
someday I'm gonna make her mine,
oh yeah,
someday I'm gonna make her mine.

Music: Noah and the Whale
Zombie Apocalypse: Not yet.
Mr. Herb: M.I.A.
